چکیده

I have calculated the dependence of the electrostatic persistence length on the Debye screening length for semiflexible, strongly and weakly charged flexible polyelectrolytes. For semiflexible and strongly charged flexible polyelectrolytes the electrostatic part of the chain persistence length is proportional to the Debye screening length. This result is obtained by evaluating the bending angle fluctuations and in the framework of the Gaussian variational principle. A polyelectrolyte chain with linear dependence of the electrostatic persistence length on the Debye screening length has a lower free energy than that of a chain with the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman electrostatic persistence length. In the case of weakly charged chains the electrostatic persistence length has a sublinear dependence on the Debye screening length which is due to inverse logarithmic dependence of the linear charge density of the chain of electrostatic blobs on the Debye screening length. This result was derived by applying a coarse-graining procedure to an initially flexible polyelectrolyte chain by representing it as a chain of electrostatic blobs. The blob size and chain persistence length are then found self-consistently by minimizing the chain’s variational free energy.

Semiflexible Polymers and Filaments

(F-) actin or microtubules belong to the class of semi-flexible polymers. The biological function of these polymers requires considerable mechanical rigidity. For example, actin filaments are the main structural element of the cytoskeleton which gives the cell unique mechanical properties as it forms a network rigid enough to maintain the shape of the cell and to transmit forces, yet flexible e...

Electrostatic complexation of spheres and chains under elastic stress

We consider the complexation of highly charged semiflexible polyelectrolytes with oppositely charged macroions. On the basis of scaling arguments we discuss how the resulting complexes depend on the persistence length of the polyelectrolyte, the salt concentration, and the sizes and charges of the chain and the macroions. We study first the case of complexation with a single sphere and calculat...

The electrostatic persistence length calculated from Monte Carlo, variational and perturbation methods

Monte Carlo simulations and variational calculations using a Gaussian ansatz are applied to a model consisting of a flexible linear polyelectrolyte chain as well as to an intrinsically stiff chain with up to 1000 charged monomers. Addition of salt is treated implicitly through a screened Coulomb potential for the electrostatic interactions. For the flexible model the electrostatic persistence l...

Electrostatic contribution to the persistence length of a semiflexible dipolar chain.

We investigate the electrostatic contribution to the persistence length of a semiflexible polymer chain whose segments interact via a screened Debye-Hückel dipolar interaction potential. We derive the expressions for the renormalized persistence length on the level of a 1/D-expansion method already successfully used in other contexts of polyelectrolye physics. We investigate different limiting ...
